Please Stop #WhyIFlyORH
We spend over 100 million dollars to improve Worcester Airport and bring back commerical service, but decide to spend nothing on advertising?? Does this make any sense???
At one time we were told by the Airport Director that there is no need to spend money on advertising in this area, since everyone already knows about the services at Worcester Airport. They do????
Next time you see someone in Worcester ask them if they know, we have:
1) Daily flights to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando with JetBlue.
2) Daily service to JetBlue hub at JFK (one turn per day), where you can connect to virtually any place you want.
3) Daily service to American hub at Philadelphia (two turns per day), where you can connect again to any place you want.
4) This summer we will have Delta to their hub in Detroit.
It is the best kept secret in Worcester County!!
Here are some basic ideas to change this:
1) Billboard on Route 290 facing both directions emphasizing the "World at your doorstep at Worcester Airport", something like that?
2) Same billboard on MassPike facing both directions.
3) Please end the #WhyIFlyORH campaign. People in Central Massachusetts already know how convenient Worcester Airport is. It is horrible!!!
4) Start a #WhereIFlyORH campaign. People in Central Massachusetts are not aware of the possibilities from our airport.
5) Lastly,we think the airport needs a spokeman. Can think of nobody better then Denis Leary.
Imagine seeinig Denis Leary's, Worcester Native, on these billboards telling people why "Worcester Airport Does not Suck."
Until we start investing money into the marketing of Worcester Airport, the taxpayers will never get the return they deserve on the monies that have been invested to date.

Change the call letter to WOO from ORH like has been mentioned before. . ORH says nothing and likely confuses people. WOO gets attention just with three letters.

Good idea but I do not think it is easy, maybe even impossible to change FAA designation. At the same time we could surely use WOO into some type of advertising campaign?

Not impossible and I don't hate it but I can see Massport laughing at the idea. ORH I have become accustomed to as well. A good start would be, ya know, a billboard or any kind of noticeable advertisement. When was the last time you saw any form of advertisement for ORH in your everyday life? Andy Davis mentioned once that the marketing was all in the Metro-West area of Boston. I work in the area between 95/495 and can honestly say I have never seen a single thing anywhere in that general area. Unless it is one single ad on a random bus stop bench in Melrose this can be chalked up to another lie we were told assuming we are idiots.

Where is this advertising money supposed to come from (especially the $500,00 or so to pay Mr. Leary)? Massport has not been willing to do this, the City won't kick in any money, the business community and the Chamber are all in on the new Worcester Red Sox team and as usual the colleges won't help in this regard. It looks like we're just going to have to do it by word or mouth, something that can take years to develop.

Common Sense: We just spent over 100 million and are planning on another 1 BILLION for capital improvements in Boston. We think to budget 1 or 2 million into advertising all these improvements to help provide a return to the taxpayers makes alot of sense??

I agree with you guys 100%. I have no problem spending $1-2 million to market ORH. My question remains as to where the money comes from. Are you suggesting that Massport take a couple million out of their operating budget to pay for it? Also, Massport got a good sum of money from federal grants to upgrade the airport. They didn't fund it all out of their capital budget.

Yes marketing Worcester Airport to the tune of 2,000,000 should be part of the Massport budget.

It just blows my mind we have to have this conversation at all. How do you invest this much to allow for so many flaws? Marketing and schedule should be two things that are a non-factor.

Isn't the Chairman of the Board at Massport an elected sheriff in Worcester county? I would think that with his clout the agency should be able to kick some marketing dollars our way. It looks like it's going to be a sink or swim approach for long-term commercial service at ORH.
