We Will Need More Flights

The one thing we can all agree on is that JetBlue flights daily to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale have been a success, now flying over 5 years consistently in the 85-90 load range. Imagine if they change the times to an early departure with a late night return, which they should do now that we have CAT III. We would fill the Embraer (100 seats) and JetBlue would have to bring in the Airbus (150 seats).

This week Skift has a post titles Why Airlines Can't Get Enough of the Sunshine State. It is a must read.

Here are some highlights:

*** The state’s 18 major airports handled 87 million passengers.

Allegiant: 58% of their seats are Florida
JetBlue: 45% "
Frontier: 35% "
American; 20% "
SouthWest: 17% "
Delta: 12% "
United: 7% "

** Florida’s importance to the U.S. airline sector is no accident. Carriers are growing there because the state’s tourism, population and economy keep growing.

We often complain here that there is no clear marketing plan for Worcester Airport. What if we made this the "leisure airport" to Florida. Imagine if we could have flights to not only Orlando and Fort Lauderdale but to all the airports in Florida. Here are just a few:

1) West Palm
2) Miami
3) Sarasota/Bradenton
4) Southwest Florida (Fort Myers)
5) Tampa
6) Jacksonville
7) Pensacola

Market Worcester as the leisure airport to Florida.

FOOTNOTE
If we ever decided to really market Worcester as the "Florida Airport in Massachusetts", we would get alot of advertsing money here from businesses/destinations in Florida trying to attract travelers.

This is a solid idea, and really could e the tip of the leisure travel iceberg. Bahamas, Bermuda, Iceland, South Carolina... All have nice budgets for tourism. And Worcester can pull from the eastern edge of the 413 to inside the 495 belt.

As a Florida transplant from Central Mass, I would take and early flight in and a late flight out of Worcester if they had it to Jacksonville. Mater of fact that would be the only flight I took. I hate the trip to and from Logan.

If leisure is the object, flights to Daytona Beach should be on this list. Both Worcester and Daytona are similar in size and very comfortable to fly in and out of. Another choice could be Sanford/ Orlando

I STOPPED flying from FT Lauderdale to Worcester after missing 2 flights due to accidents/Construction in FT Lauderdale area and now only fly West Palm to Boston. If JetBlue flew Worcester to West Palm I would him back on the route

Definitely flights to Ft. Myers are needed. I am from Worcester living in Ft. Myers area. Would get me home more often to visit family if the price is right. Currently fly Providence to Punta Gorda on Alligiant airlines. Get them to come to Worcester. I bet the majority of people out if Providence are from Worcester county!

I live below the direct landing approach to the main runway. I'm willing to put up with some more traffic, but beyond that it would be a major annoyance. Any significant growth is going to be met with strong opposition from the neighbors in the Tatnuck Square neighborhood. They stopped the state's plan to build an access road from I-290 and they filed a federal lawsuit to stop the new terminal from being built. I'm telling you to not dismiss this impediment to growth at ORH. I think they would tolerate maybe 10-15 flights a day, but beyond that Massport is pushing their luck

Common sense this is the first time in a long time I disagree with you here. Only thing the public has say in is expansion as that has an approval process. Adding flights however does not so you’re going to have to put up with it or move out. You think your noise problems would be any different than any other airport in the country? The least of Massport’s concerns are neighbors unhappy with the noise. If anything they invite it - if you don’t like noise don’t move next to an airport.

West Palm is an ideal place to fly Jet Blue Non-stop. Especially for your Senior Citizens. Especially for those who fly by themselves. I have been waiting for Jet Blue to make a move......Flying from Worcester to Lauderdale is way to much, and I have been limo-ing into Boston to get to Palm Beach Gardens. West Palm non-stop from Worcester is my choice.

Let me tell you how things work in the real world. If you think Massport is going to ram a major increase in service down our throats you are very naïve. Let me tell you how politics works. If the neighbors feel that their quality of life is reduced due to a major increase in air traffic, they'll form a neighborhood group and have meetings. They'll invite the mayor, city council and state reps. They'll give these politicians an earful about how growth at ORH needs to be curbed. The spineless politicians will back the neighbors up (for fear of losing votes). Then pressure will be put on Massport to limit any increase in commercial traffic. Massport actually wanted to take over ORH about 30 years ago (to show the neighbors of East Boston that they were looking at alternatives to a new runway). After various neighborhood meetings the City pretty much told them to take a hike. I don't know how you can look at what's happening now at ORH and feel good. JetBlue still can't fill up their smallest plane to the two FL routes. The flight to JFK (one of the largest international airports in the world) is half empty. Delta will start service in August to a hub that no one in Worcester wants to fly to. I've read on this blog that the initial response to the AA to PHI flights is anemic. Am I missing something?

Sanford Fl. To Worcester and or Daytona Beach to Worcester. Would love these flights to actually happen.

Dylan

Massport decided not to - if they took over the results may have been very different. Massport expended terminal E and is planning a terminal F at Logan which is far more noise sensitive than ORH, and you don’t think any of that was met without opposition? I’ve said this to you before I’ll say this again it is not the year 2001 anymore. You better believe Massport didn’t invest 200 million in ORH so far to have 10 flights a day. You can form your public groups all you want they are not turning away flights because you’re concerned about noise I can promise you that. Airports similar to ORH are booming across the country and you don’t think the neighbors are complaining there too? The service as it stands now is a different story. To be fair the Florida flights have been full for a while jetBlue just isn’t trying to expand the service. How some people still have their jobs at ORH is beyond me. Every other airport director is a young guy pushing for greatness, meanwhile we have a guy who was part of the original problem satisfied with 40 percent loads. It’s staggering the difference.

Maybe they can get rid of the 10 managers working at ORH under Andy Davis. They could probably save $1 million a year in salaries that could be used for an “effective” marketing plan. That would be a game changer.

I agree that we need a none- stop flight to and from Worcester to West Palm Beach. I would advise you to e-mail JetBlue that you prefer to fly into West Palm Beach from Worcester. JetBlue is starting a new flight from Providence, Rhode Island on 2-14-2019 to West Palm Beach. Frontier airlines could be another option to serve these two destinations.Email Worcester Airport to start talks with airlines about these routes. People prefer to fly to and from West Palm Beach.
