New airline announcement April 9th. We are going with Piedmont
Yesterday we reached out to all our contacts to see what they thought the announcement would be Monday morning. We heard different ideas from SouthWest, Spirit, Frontier, another direct destination from JetBlue and American to Chicago. In the end the consensus was American Airline Regional Carrier, Piedmont Airlines, to Philadelphia.
This would be great news and directly related to the installation of the CAT III Landing System. Please remember it has been Massport, who has invested close to $50 million dollars into ORH. This never would have happened, if the City of Worcester maintained ownership. Also let us emphasize that CAT III are bringing carriers to ORH, not a name change or access road or for that matter a new terminal.
American Airlines will also help in another way. Currently there simply is not enough
being invested advertising services out of ORH. American Airlines flying daily to their hub in Philadelphia coupled with JetBlue flying daily to their hub in NYC next month will create alot of interest and bring needed exposure. Having two carriers will force them also to compete, which should bring more advertising dollars from these airlines.
We should start seeing more announcements coming in 2018 truly making ORH an asset to the taxpayers.
SIDEBAR: We only bring this up as we look at another floundering city owned asset, Union Station. Lets hope the $3,000 study considers privatization of this asset like we did with ORH, since currently Union Station is only a liability for the taxpayers.
Service to Portland, Maine, and Syracuse, N.Y., will mark Frontier’s first foray into those cities. With Harrisburg, Pa., and Spokane, Wash., Frontier is returning to two cities it previously served.
Frontier’s new-service announcements also shines a light on Raleigh/Durham (RDU).
While Frontier already serves the North Carolina airport, it announced three new routes there. Once they begin, Frontier will be the only airline flying from Raleigh/Durham to northeastern cities of Harrisburg, Portland and Syracuse. With those, Frontier now offers either seasonal or year-round service to 18 non-stop destinations from RDU.
