Can Only Help Portsmouth

There are two discount carriers, Allegaint and Frontier, that would be perfect for Worcester Airport. Both would be perfect compliment to our daily JetBlue direct flights to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale. Frontier and Allegaint could fill the need for service to the Gulf Coast and Myrtle Beach with 2 or 3 flights per week perfectly.

To date, they have chosen not to Worcester. On the other hand, both of these airlines have chosen to go to Portsmouth Airport and do quite well. One would think this would bode well for Worcester, but it has not??

Now we have read that WOW Airlines is having some cash problems and have received help from Frontier Parent, Indigo parters. From Forbes ,here is a great quote:

"Indigo, the successful investor behind Frontier, WizzAir, Volaris and previously Spirit Airlines, has offered a financial lifeline to the Icelandic low-cost carrier, which remains at-risk of rapidly depleting its cash following Icelandair’s departure from the acquisition table."

Very interesting concept turning WOW into a virutal airline:

On a virtual WOW, unsuspecting passengers would board a Frontier-operated plane from, say, Trenton to Reykjavik, then connect to a Wizz-operated plane from there to Europe — all under the guise of a WOW ticket. To meet its flying obligations, WOW would contract as much lift from Frontier and Wizz as Icelandic regulators permit. Additional back-office functions could be consolidated into Wizz, Frontier or both.

Developments like this between WOW and Frontier may be fruitful for Portsmouth down the road.

Why are the airlines like Southwest, Frontier, and Allegiant so reluctant to use Worcester? Worcester servers a bigger population then Manchester. If you look at the population of the whole Worcester County area that would probably be about 500,000 people maybe a million if you want include the Metro west region and Franklin County. I don’t understand why the airlines themselves aren’t marketing Worcester like Southwest markets their cities they out of?

I remember the CEO of Southwest speaking at a breakfast event in front of the Worcester Economic Club. She was asked if they would consider ORH. She said it wouldn’t happen unless Worcester had an access road from a major highway (I-290). That was pre-GPS so I don't know if it would still be a deal breaker. We might have 500,000 people in our catchment area, but 450,000 of them are using the four major airports within one hour from our city. I really don't see how much more convenient it is for people in the Metro-West to fly ORH rather than Logan. Depending on traffic the drive time to Logan can almost be the same. Based on that I really don't see ORH being any more than a niche airport catering to the Florida leisure crowd. I think junkets to Las Vegas every Saturday would do well. I just don’t see how bringing in Mickey Mouse carriers helps at this point.

We do not need an access road. Everyone has GPS and Worcester is actually very easy and convenient to get to. Boston has an access road, it is by far no easy to get to. Boys, Direct Air was a "mickey mouse' airline. Allegiant and Frontier are not Direct Air and would be great additions to Worcester Airport. Actually kind of embarassing that they have chosen Portsmouth over us????

I don't think ORH needs an access road, but if some airlines think we do that's a problem. Probably 75% of people in our area couldn't name any of the two (three in August) "major" airlines now flying out of Worcester. Getting them to know about other airlines they never heard of will require tons of marketing. Based on what we have seen so far, it doesn't seem Massport and the current airlines are willing to do that. Happy New Year everyone!!! I look forward to more spirited debate in 2019.
